Min første Steelhead
Efter 20 timers rejsetid når vi frem til Kitimat Lodge, hvor vi skal bo i fem dage. Det regner kraftigt – rigtig kraftigt. Vi tørner ind ved 23 tiden og skal allerede op igen 4.30. Humøret er højt – vi skal jo igang med at fiske! Den silende regn er jo bare sådan som det nu er når vi nyder at fiske og være med naturens luner. Det er vores første dag og turen går til Kalum River 60 km fra Kitimat.
Vi mødes med Gordt, som er en yderst kompetent guide født og opvokset ved floden. Sammen kører vi op langs Kalum river. Det står ned i stænger og floden er vild og rivende. Vandet stiger støt i floden og bliver mere og mere uklart. Det ligner efterhånden en godt rystet cocio bare uden hotdog. Gordt mener nok det kan gå, så vi sejler fluks ned til 10 miles spottet og vi sættes i land. Jeg har ingen waders og er i shorts og støvler. Så har egentlig regnet med blot at følge Malthe og Gert og tage nogle billeder. De går igang med fiskeriet og Malthe og Gert brillere med spey- og Skagit kast – jeg tusser lidt rundt i skovkanten og kigger på. Ser mig godt for, da der er bjørne i området – vi kan se at der er trukket en del kongelaks kadavere op i skovbrynet og der kommer de jo ikke op af sig selv. Det larmer også godt i skoven da vi sættes i land, så vigtigt at larme og kigge sig godt for.
Malthe og Gert mærker et par fisk og vi ser også nogle sølvlaks. Efter et stykke tid foreslår Gordt, at jeg prøver at fiske fra båden, selvom det ikke er let at stå der med en fluestang og skal til at lære spey- og Skagit kast. Nå, men det er nu som det er, så jeg prøver. Og så sker det altså – tredje kast en stor bølge efter fluen, 10 minutter efter er den helt sikker – en gudeskøn sølvlaks hugger og kommer på land – dagen er reddet, men skæbnen vil det anderledes.
En halv time senere strammes fluelinen op og jeg løfter stangen og så siger det bare breeeeee fra hjulet da fisken hamrer ned ad floden. Forsøger at bremse fisken så godt jeg kan og får et ordentligt slag af hjulet der farer rundt. Er helt sikker på at det går galt, men får stoppet fisken 60-70 meter ude. Det er ikke gået op for mig endnu, men det er en fantastisk steelhead på 90 cm jeg lægger arm med – det er altså bare surrealistisk. Gordt tager det helt med ro og wader ud til fisken længere nede af floden – jeg kan ligesom ikke andet end blive på båden. Og det lykkedes selvfølgelig – Gordt får fisken i nettet!!! Først da jeg ser fisken i nettet går det op for mig, at det her er helt speciel – ja Gert er næsten ved at knibe en tåre. Nu forstår jeg Gerts passion for Steelheads og fluefiskeri – det er bare noget helt for sig selv og de her Steelheads er verdens største OG SMUKKESTE. Det er uden sammenligning den smukkeste og mest fuldendte fisk jeg har fanget og sikke en kraft den har. Vi behandler den med stor forsigtighed og respekt og får taget de billeder vi skal have inden hun smutter ud at hænderne på mig og forsvinder tilbage i Kalum river.
Jeg er bare taknemmelig – tak skæbne og fiskeguder…
Vi fisker videre og mister nogle sølvlaks og Malthe og Gert får nogle white fish og flotte dolly warden ørreder, ellers regner dagen væk og vandet bliver helt og aldeles brunt.
