Turen til Kitimat Canada BC efter steelhead i april/maj må betegnes som vellykket.
Vi ankom med fly til Terrace i det nordlige BC ikke langt fra den sydlige del af Alaska og ikke langt til den kendte fiskerby Prince Rubert som ligger helt ud til Stillehavet. Målet var Kitimat River. Terrace er byen hvor mange sportsfiskere rejser til med Skeena River ret uden for døren. Skeena River er den næststørste flod i provinsen BC med et vandløb på over 580 km og afvander et område på ca. 54.000 km2 hvilket gør den til den næststørste flod i BC kun overgået af Fraser River i det sydlige BC. Skeena River systemet med de mange kendte bifloder er kendt for noget af verdens bedste sportsfiske floder, især laks og steelhead.
Vi fik bilen, en 4×4 udleveret, hvilket altid er et godt valg, på grund af vejr og vejforholdene i Canada og ikke mindst for at komme ud til de rette fiskepladser. Vi ankom i halvmørke til Kitimat og vågnede op til et fantastisk sceneri og omgivet af sneklædte bjerge – det lignede mest af alt et postkort. Lidt koldt om morgenen på denne årstid men op af dagen kom solen og det blev lidt lunere.
Kitimat ligger tæt på havet, hvor der også findes mange muligheder for fiskeri efter friske laks, store Helleflyndere og meget andet. Alt kan arrangeret af Kitimat Lodge, hvor vi opholdt os under hele turen. Vi boede i dejlige dobbeltværelser med køkken, selv catering, toilet og bad.
Steelheads var vores fiskemål
Fiskeriet efter de grå spøgelser er ikke et nemt fiskeri og det er krævende for den enkelte lystfisker. Derfor skal man ikke forvente de smukt marmorerede fisk på land hver dag, der skal virkelig kæmpes for det. Når først du mærker en Steelhead tager fluen og bare spoler line ud, ja så er det hele indsatsen værd. Adrenalinen pumper ud i blodet og man er ikke i tvivl om at det er en ”steelie” der hugger. Den går ret ud af vandet som en raket og slækker du linen bare et split sekund er fisken væk og tanken om at den ”kun” har hugget på en lille enkeltkrog uden modhager gør det endnu mere spændende.
De Canadiske guider vi arbejder sammen med på vore ture er født og opvokset omkring Kitimat og Terrace og ved hvad de har med at gøre. Vi tog flere ture med guider i både Jet og drift både – begge dele er en stor oplevelse. Vi fiskede flere gange på Kalum River et Klassificeret fiskevand. Det vil sige et ”højt produktivt fiskevand”. Det foregik med Jet båd og under kyndig håndtering af guiderne. Det er en fantastisk smuk flod med masser af fiskespots vi kan nå med fluestangen.
